Torbay is a town located on the eastern side of the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The town is located 12 km north of the capital city of St. John's and is part of the St. John's Metropolitan Area. Due to Torbay's close proximity to St. John's, the town's population is quickly growing. According to the 2011 census, the population was 7,397, up 17.8% since 2006. The name Torbay comes from Torbay, Devon, England and was first mapped in 1615 by John Mason. It comes from the old Anglo-Saxon "Tor" which means "a rocky hill." Both places are geographically similar with wide-open bays that face in a northeasterly direction.
Newfoundland and Labrador is the most easterly province of Canada. Situated in the country's Atlantic region, it comprises the island of Newfoundland and mainland Labrador to the northwest, with a combined area of 405,212 square kilometres. In 2013, the province's population was estimated at 526,702. About 92% of the province's population lives on the island of Newfoundland and its neighbouring smaller islands. A former colony then dominion of the United Kingdom, Newfoundland and Labrador became the tenth province to enter the Canadian Confederation on March 31, 1949, as "Newfoundland." On December 6, 2001, an amendment was made to the Constitution of Canada to change the province's official name to Newfoundland and Labrador. In day-to-day conversation, however, Canadians generally still refer to the province itself as Newfoundland and that part of it on the Canadian mainland as Labrador.
