Cornwall is a town located in Queens County, Prince Edward Island, Canada with a 2011 population of 5,162. The town is located immediately west of the provincial capital Charlottetown and functions as a bedroom community. The community of Cornwall traces its history to European settlement in the 18th century and was a predominantly farming community until the construction of Route 1, the Trans-Canada Highway, during the early 1960s. Several subdivisions were created near the intersection of the new highway with the Meadowbank Road, along with a small commercial strip. The present town was incorporated by the provincial government in 1995 through municipal amalgamation of several rural communities.
Prince Edward Island is a province of Canada consisting of the island of the same name. It is one of the three Maritime Provinces and is the smallest province in both land area and population. It is the only province of Canada to have no land boundary. PEI became the seventh Canadian province in 1873. The backbone of the economy is farming, as it produces 25% of Canada's potatoes. Historically, PEI is one of Canada's older settlements and demographically still reflects older immigration to the country, with Celtic, Anglosaxon and French surnames being overwhelmingly dominant to this day. According to the 2011 census, the province of Prince Edward Island had 140,204 residents. It is located about 200 km north of Halifax, Nova Scotia and 600 km east of Quebec City. It consists of the main island and 231 minor islands. Altogether, the entire province has a land area of 5,685.73 km sq. Its capital is Charlottetown.
