Nanaimo is a city on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada with a 2011 population of 83,810. It is known as "The Harbour City." The City was previously known as "Hub City," which has been attributed to its original layout design where the streets radiated out from the shoreline like the spokes of a wagon wheel, as well as its generally centralized location on Vancouver Island. Nanaimo is also the headquarters of the Regional District of Nanaimo. The first Europeans to find Nanaimo Bay were those of the 1791 Spanish voyage of Juan Carrasco under the command of Francisco de Eliza. Nanaimo began as a trading post in the early 19th century. The town became chiefly known for the export of coal.

British Columbia (commonly referred to by its initials BC) is the westernmost province of Canada, with a population of more than 4 million people located between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. The province's name was chosen in 1858 by members of the Hudson's Bay Company. The first British settlement in the area was the Colony of British Columbia (1858–66). The first Lieutenant-Governor (1858 to 1863) was Richard Clement Moody, who was hand-picked by the Colonial Office in London to transform British Columbia into the British Empire's "bulwark in the farthest west," and “to found a second England on the shores of the Pacific.” Moody selected the site for and founded the original capital of British Columbia, New Westminster and established the Cariboo Road and Stanley Park.In 1871, British Columbia became the sixth province of Canada.
