Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia, Canada, and is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island off Canada's Pacific coast. The city had a population of 80,017 in 2011, while the metropolitan area of Greater Victoria, had a population of 344,615, making it the 15th most populous Canadian urban region. Named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and, at the time, British North America, Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest, with British settlement beginning in 1843. The city has retained a large number of its historic buildings, in particular its two most famous landmarks, Legislative buildings (finished in 1897 and home of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia) and the Empress hotel (opened in 1908). The city's Chinatown is the second oldest in North America after San Francisco's. Known as the "The Garden City," Victoria is an attractive city and a popular tourism destination with a thriving technology sector that has risen to be its largest revenue-generating private industry.

British Columbia (commonly referred to by its initials BC) is the westernmost province of Canada, with a population of more than 4 million people located between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. The province's name was chosen in 1858 by members of the Hudson's Bay Company. The first British settlement in the area was the Colony of British Columbia (1858–66). The first Lieutenant-Governor (1858 to 1863) was Richard Clement Moody, who was hand-picked by the Colonial Office in London to transform British Columbia into the British Empire's "bulwark in the farthest west," and “to found a second England on the shores of the Pacific.” Moody selected the site for and founded the original capital of British Columbia, New Westminster and established the Cariboo Road and Stanley Park.In 1871, British Columbia became the sixth province of Canada.
