Corner Brook is a city located on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland, Canada with a 2011 population of 19,886. Located on the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River, the city is the largest population centre in the province after St. John's. As such, Corner Brook functions as a service centre for western and northern Newfoundland. It is the administrative headquarters of the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nations band government. The area was surveyed by Captain James Cook in 1767. By the middle of the 19th century, the population of Corner Brook was less than 100, and the inhabitants were engaged in fishing and lumber work. The area was originally four distinct communities, each with unique commercial activities: Curling, with its fishery; Corner Brook West with its retail businesses; Corner Brook East with its railway and industrial operations; and Townsite, home to the employees of the pulp and paper mill. In 1956, these four communities were amalgamated to form the present-day City of Corner Brook.

Newfoundland and Labrador is the most easterly province of Canada. Situated in the country's Atlantic region, it comprises the island of Newfoundland and mainland Labrador to the northwest, with a combined area of 405,212 square kilometres. In 2013, the province's population was estimated at 526,702. About 92% of the province's population lives on the island of Newfoundland and its neighbouring smaller islands. A former colony then dominion of the United Kingdom, Newfoundland and Labrador became the tenth province to enter the Canadian Confederation on March 31, 1949, as "Newfoundland." On December 6, 2001, an amendment was made to the Constitution of Canada to change the province's official name to Newfoundland and Labrador. In day-to-day conversation, however, Canadians generally still refer to the province itself as Newfoundland and that part of it on the Canadian mainland as Labrador.
